When and How to do it

Do you have a young tree and are wondering what you should do with it if anything?  Did your tree come with sticks attached to it to help keep it straight and upright? Now on to young tree pruning. New trees (under two years old) should only be pruned to remove dead or broken branches. Leave all small suckers and leaves on the trunk during this time. These branches and leaves help the young tree grow a strong trunk.

At two years old, you can start pruning your young tree to develop the shape that you want.  Unless you bought a multi-trunk type tree, your tree will have one main trunk. It’s best to prune your young tree right before spring when it leafs out. You can see the branching of the tree because there are few or no leaves this time of year. Prune off any crossing branches. They can rub together and damage each other. Also remove any dead, broken, or rubbing branches.

Do not remove more than 25% of the branches during any one pruning. Taking off more than this can damage the tree. And, always use care to make sure you do not rip the bark on the tree. Using clean, sharp tools will ensure that you make good cuts that allow your tree to heal properly.

Remember that properly pruning your tree when it’s young will help you have a healthy tree as it grows. And, will give you a beautiful tree that requires less maintenance as it ages.

Delicious and moist banana bread with applesauce.
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 4 large ripe to overripe mashed bananas
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  1. Preheat oven to 350
  2. Mix flour, baking soda, and cinnamon in a large bowl
  3. Mix brown sugar and applesauce until completely blended
  4. Add 2 eggs, vanilla, and bananas to the sugar and mix well
  5. Add wet ingredients into the dry and fold until all ingredients are wet
  6. Pour into a greased 9X5 bread pan
  7. Bake on 350 for 60-70 minutes or until toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean
  8. Enjoy
