Last year, my neighbor called me in a panic: his Christmas tree, bought just a few days after Thanksgiving, was already dropping needles and looking dry. In Tucson’s desert heat, even a freshly cut tree can struggle if it isn’t cared for properly. Watching him scramble with buckets of water and misting sprays reminded me — in Southern Arizona, keeping a real Christmas tree looking lush requires a little extra know-how.

If you’re bringing a real tree into your home this season, here’s how to choose wisely, place smartly, and keep it looking beautiful through December, even in the desert environment

.

Choosing the Right Tree in Southern Arizona

Unlike cooler climates, we don’t have Christmas tree farms nearby. Most locals purchase trees from nurseries, garden centers, or big box stores. When shopping, inspect the tree for flexible branches, vibrant green needles, and minimal needle drop.

Nordmann firs and Fraser firs are popular choices because they hold needles longer — essential in Arizona’s dry climate. Ask your local nursery staff which varieties they recommend for desert homes, and try to purchase your tree as close to your decorating day as possible.

Preparing and Hydrating Your Tree

Once home, cut about an inch off the trunk before placing it in a water-holding stand. This fresh cut allows the tree to absorb water efficiently. Keep the stand filled daily — warm desert weather causes rapid drying. Some Arizona homeowners even keep their trees misted with water in the morning or evening to add humidity.

Placing your tree in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight, heaters, or wood-burning fireplaces, will also help it last. High heat and low humidity are the biggest challenges here, so small adjustments make a huge difference.'

Where (and Where Not) to Put Your Tree

Southern Arizona homes often have open layouts, which is great — just avoid placing your tree in high-traffic areas, near electronics, or too close to radiators and heating vents.

Consider a corner of your living or family room that’s shaded from windows and away from desert heat, and use a sturdy stand that holds enough water. LED lights are recommended because they emit minimal heat and help prevent needle drying.

Enjoy a Longer-Lasting, Beautiful Tree

With proper care, your Christmas tree can stay vibrant and safe throughout the season. Frequent watering, proper placement, and occasional misting will help your tree maintain its color and fragrance despite Arizona’s dry climate.
