Memorial Day in Southern Arizona often means backyard barbecues, family gatherings, sunshine, and time spent outdoors before the summer heat fully arrives. But before we fire up the grill or gather with loved ones, Memorial Day gives us an opportunity to pause and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Their sacrifice helped preserve something we often take for granted: the freedom to enjoy ordinary moments—sharing meals, spending time with family, relaxing in our homes, and enjoying the outdoor spaces we love.

While Memorial Day is often associated with long weekends and celebrations, it is first and foremost a day of remembrance for military service members who never made it home. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs encourages Americans to honor the fallen through reflection, visiting memorials or cemeteries, displaying the American flag respectfully, or observing the National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 p.m. local time.

If you would like to learn more about Memorial Day traditions and ways to honor service members, visit the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Memorial Day Resources or the National Cemetery Administration Memorial Day Guide.

Creating a Meaningful Memorial in Your Landscape

At Sonoran Oasis Landscaping, we believe outdoor spaces can become places for connection, peace, and remembrance.

One thoughtful way to honor someone this Memorial Day is by creating a meaningful outdoor tribute in your yard or community landscape. In desert climates like Tucson and Southern Arizona, even a small planting can become a lasting symbol of gratitude.

Consider:

  • Planting a shade tree in memory of a loved one or fallen service member

  • Adding drought-tolerant flowering plants such as red yucca, desert marigold, penstemon, or lantana

  • Creating a quiet seating area for reflection beneath a tree or ramada

  • Using red, white, and blue blooms in a water-wise desert planting design

The idea of planting trees in remembrance has deep meaning and continues to be encouraged by organizations focused on stewardship and legacy. The Arbor Day Foundation Memorial Trees Program offers ideas about commemorative tree planting and honoring loved ones through living landscapes.

Honoring Memorial Day While Still Enjoying the Day

Memorial Day does not have to be solemn from sunrise to sunset. In many ways, enjoying the freedoms others sacrificed to protect is itself a tribute.

Before the food is served or the swimming begins, consider taking one small moment as a family:

  • Observe a minute of silence

  • Share gratitude for service members who gave their lives

  • Tell a family story about military service

  • Visit a memorial or veterans cemetery

  • Pause together during the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. local time

Connection, gratitude, and joy can exist alongside remembrance.

This Memorial Day, whether you spend time in your backyard, garden, or neighborhood, may your outdoor space be a place to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy and the people who made them possible.

From all of us at Sonoran Oasis Landscaping, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave everything for our country.
